The Machame Route, famously known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Offering a challenging yet rewarding climb, this 7-day trek provides stunning views, varied landscapes, and excellent acclimatization opportunities, making it a favorite for adventurous climbers.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Rest and prepare for your thrilling adventure.

  • Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (2,835 m)

    Hiking time: 5–7 hours Distance: 11 km (7 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Begin your trek at Machame Gate, hiking through lush rainforest filled with unique flora and fauna. Arrive at Machame Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

  • Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750 m)

    Hiking time: 4–6 hours Distance: 5 km (3 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo Peak as you trek to Shira Camp for the night.

  • Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900 m)

    Hiking time: 6–8 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This day helps your body adjust to the altitude while providing incredible views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers.

  • Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 5 km (3 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding climb. Traverse ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, a key acclimatization point.

  • Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Climb steadily through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Prepare your gear and rest early for the midnight ascent.

  • Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and down to Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

    Summit time: 6–8 hours Descent time: 5–7 hours Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles) Habitat: Arctic and Rainforest
    Start your summit push at midnight, trekking through scree to reach Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing to Mweka Camp for the night.

  • Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,650 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll collect your summit certificate. Return to Moshi for some well-deserved rest and celebration at your hotel.

  • Day 9: Rest and Departure

    Spend your final day at a hotel in Moshi, reflecting on your achievement and relaxing after the trek. Explore the town, shop for souvenirs, or simply unwind. Later, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your unforgettable adventure.
