The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route offering hut accommodations, making it a popular choice for trekkers. Known for its gradual ascent and scenic beauty, this 5 to 6-day trek is perfect for those seeking a more straightforward path to Africa’s highest peak.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.

  • Day 2: Moshi to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 8 km (5 miles) Habitat: Montane Forest Start your journey from the Marangu Gate after registration. Trek through lush rainforest, keeping an eye out for monkeys and exotic birds. Reach Mandara Hut for an overnight stay.

  • Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park

    Hiking time: 5–6 hours Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles) Habitat: Heathland Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heathland zone. Enjoy views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks as you make your way to Horombo Hut, your resting spot for the night.

  • Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703 m)

    Hiking time: 6–7 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert Ascend into the alpine desert, passing the “Last Water Point.” Trek through arid landscapes to reach Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest before the summit attempt.

  • Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and back to Horombo Hut

    Summit time: 6–8 hours Descent time: 5–6 hours Distance: 15 km (9.3 miles) Habitat: Arctic Begin your ascent at midnight, trekking through scree and ice to reach Gilman’s Point. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for an overnight stay.

  • Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860 m)

    Hiking time: 6–7 hours Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles) Habitat: Heathland and Montane Forest Descend through the heathland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and return to Moshi for rest and celebration.

  • Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860 m)

    Hiking time: 6–7 hours Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles) Habitat: Heathland and Montane Forest Descend through the heathland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate and return to Moshi for rest and celebration.

  • Day 7: Rest and Departure

    Spend your final day at a hotel in Moshi, relaxing after your challenging trek. Enjoy a well-earned rest or explore the town for souvenirs and local culture. Later, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your unforgettable journey.
