The Rongai Route offers a quieter and more remote trekking experience on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the mountain’s northern side near the Kenyan border, this 6-day journey is known for its serene landscapes, lower traffic, and gradual ascent, making it a great choice for trekkers seeking solitude and scenic beauty.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Relax and prepare for your thrilling adventure.

  • Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,650 m)

    Hiking time: 3–4 hours Distance: 8 km (5 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Begin your trek at Rongai Gate, hiking through dense forests filled with unique wildlife. Reach Simba Camp, your first stop, and enjoy views of Kenya’s plains.

  • Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp (3,450 m)

    Hiking time: 3–5 hours Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Ascend steadily into the moorland zone, passing through open landscapes with breathtaking views. Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you’ll rest for the night.

  • Day 4: Second Cave Camp to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600 m)

    Hiking time: 5–7 hours Distance: 9 km (5.6 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Trek through undulating terrain with spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at Kikelelwa Camp, nestled near a cluster of caves, for an overnight stay.

  • Day 5: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Climb steadily to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. Enjoy an afternoon acclimatization hike and take in the stunning alpine scenery.

  • Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

    Hiking time: 5–6 hours Distance: 8 km (5 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Cross the lunar-like Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to reach Kibo Hut. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit push.

  • Day 7: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

    Summit time: 6–8 hours Descent time: 5–6 hours Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles) Habitat: Arctic and Moorland
    Begin your ascent at midnight, trekking through scree to Gilman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.

  • Day 8: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,860 m)

    Hiking time: 5–7 hours Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles) Habitat: Moorland and Rainforest
    Trek downhill through diverse ecosystems to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

  • Day 9: Rest and Departure

    Spend your final day at a hotel in Moshi, reflecting on your achievement and relaxing after the trek. Explore the town, shop for souvenirs, or simply unwind. Later, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, marking the end of your unforgettable adventure.
