The Shira Route begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a unique perspective and incredible landscapes. This 7-day trek combines adventure and acclimatization as it transitions from lush forests to the alpine desert, leading to the iconic summit at Uhuru Peak. Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Relax and prepare for your thrilling adventure.

  • Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

    Hiking time: 3–4 hours Distance: 8 km (5 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Drive to Londorossi Gate and continue to the starting point. Begin your trek across the Shira Plateau, with vast moorlands and scenic views, to Shira 1 Camp.

  • Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Trek across the expansive Shira Plateau, surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas. Reach Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll acclimate and enjoy the tranquil environment.

  • Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900 m)

    Hiking time: 6–8 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) for acclimatization and descend to Barranco Camp. The day offers spectacular views and a mix of terrains.

  • Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 5 km (3 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Climb the Barranco Wall, a thrilling section of the route. Cross valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp for an overnight stay.

  • Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Ascend steadily to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Prepare your gear and rest ahead of the midnight climb.

  • Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and down to Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

    Summit time: 6–8 hours Descent time: 5–7 hours Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles) Habitat: Arctic and Rainforest
    Begin the summit push at midnight, reaching Stella Point and continuing to Uhuru Peak. Celebrate your success before descending to Barafu Camp for a short break and continuing to Mweka Camp.

  • Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,650 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for a night of relaxation at your hotel.

  • Day 9: Rest and Departure

    Spend your final day at a hotel in Moshi. Unwind, reflect on your achievement, or explore the local area before transferring to Kilimanjaro International Airport to conclude your adventure.
