Overview

The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest and most challenging ways to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep and direct ascent, this 6-day trek is ideal for experienced climbers looking for a physically demanding yet incredibly rewarding adventure. It offers breathtaking views and a more secluded experience.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

    Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guides for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Rest up and prepare for your climb.

  • Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850 m)

    Hiking time: 5–7 hours Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Begin your climb at Umbwe Gate, trekking through lush rainforest with towering trees and vibrant wildlife. The trail is steep but offers an invigorating start to the adventure. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for your first overnight stop.

  • Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles) Habitat: Moorland
    Continue your ascent along a steep ridge, with dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers and valleys below. Arrive at Barranco Camp, surrounded by stunning scenery.

  • Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 5 km (3 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling and rewarding section of the route. Traverse ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, where you’ll rest and acclimatize.

  • Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles) Habitat: Alpine Desert
    Ascend to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Rest, enjoy a hearty meal, and prepare for the midnight summit push.

  • Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and down to Mweka Camp (3,080 m)

    Summit time: 6–8 hours Descent time: 5–7 hours Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles) Habitat: Arctic and Rainforest
    Begin your summit attempt in the early hours, trekking through the night to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing to Mweka Camp.

  • Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,650 m)

    Hiking time: 4–5 hours Distance: 10 km (6 miles) Habitat: Rainforest
    Complete your descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest at your hotel.

  • Day 8: Rest and Departure

    Spend your final day relaxing at your hotel in Moshi. Reflect on your incredible journey, explore the area, or shop for souvenirs before heading to Kilimanjaro International Airport to conclude your adventure.
